The issue with kit builds in general is that while you get to do the work, you still don't necessarily develop an understanding of how tube amps work. If you're a complete noob, and are a bit scared of electricity, or feel overwhelmed by the task, then StewMac kits are really going to help you get started. They even surpass the excellent instructions included with an Allen kit I built a few years ago. These are hands-down the best instructions I've seen on any kit. I'm not the target audience for their kits, but I just read the instructions for their 6G15 kit.
